About Us


Old Bus is an expression of the humble, steady and unfettered approach we take to brewing and cooking – and life. Co-founders Ben, Jimmy, John and Tim focus on making the best-tasting beer and food we can, using locally sourced ingredients whenever possible.

We also actually do spend a lot of time on old buses. John restored a 1978 Volkswagen Westfalia and spent a summer touring the country with his wife and dog before landing in Oakland, where it’s now become our delivery and adventure vehicle.

After a long and careful search, we have finally found a home for the Old Bus Tavern at 3193 Mission Street in Bernal Heights, opening early 2015.

After eight years of home-brewing together, John and Ben are now sharing their creations with a wider audience. Our beers are all based on classic styles that we’ve reinterpreted through constant experimentation. While we love big, unusual beers as much as any beer geek, we strive to create brews that are enjoyable from start to finish, day after day.

In addition to our own beers brewed in-house, we offer a rotating selection of other local craft beers, wines, and artisan cocktails made with simple, high-quality ingredients.

The Old Bus kitchen, and specifically our chili, is helmed by Tim and Jimmy. While working together one night at a local restaurant, they realized that they shared a deep love of all things chili. Jimmy had been entering and winning chili contests for several years, while Tim had been cooking his 40-year-old family recipe every chance he could get. Before long, the two were honing their recipes and techniques by challenging each other to one-on-one chili battles.

Old Bus Tavern specializes in comfort foods prepared simply with locally sourced ingredients. In addition to staples such as our chili, burgers, and Frito pie, we will also offer bar snacks, fresh salads, and several vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options.
